JAMIE Gleeson is seeking FA Cup redemption after his last appearance in the first round proper ended in double despair.

Four years ago, the tenacious midfielder was sent off in extra-time for a second bookable offence and higher-ranked Oxford United went on to prevail 3-1 at the Avenue and book their place in round two.

With that in mind, Gleeson is determined to make amends when the Magpies entertain Plymouth Argyle in a televised encounter on November 4.

The 27-year-old, enjoying arguably his best spell at the county town club, told Echosport: “Unfortunately I got sent off in the replay.

“In my mind we won the first game anyway as Ryan Moss’ goal should never have been disallowed.

“It would be nice to have a better memory of the first round as no one wants to get sent off in game like that.

“It was 1-1 at that stage and with them being full-time they were much fitter than us in extra-time.

“They were getting on top and I got a bit frustrated with one of their players. But having already committed a bad foul in the first half I know I shouldn’t have gone in for the tackle.

“I’d like to think I will have a better memory after the Plymouth game, maybe even one of getting to the second round this time.”

Asked if he and his team-mates can pull off a major upset in 10 days’ time, the former Southampton trainee replied: “It’s a good tie in lots of ways. It’s against a League club, it’s a bit of a local derby and, you just never, we might be able to nick a victory.

“It can happen in the cup, especially if we can spoil their game and distract them from their game plan.

“As a League side they will be fit, they will pass the ball well and they will have a bit of quality – but you never know what can happen.

“The underdogs often do well and there won’t be any pressure on us. The pressure will be on them to come here and do a professional job.

“And having been knocked out by Stourbridge last season they will surely have that in the back of their mind.

“We are doing well at home and if they come to us and rest on their laurels they could come unstuck.”

Gleeson is also relishing the opportunity to play in front of the ESPN cameras – a privilege that will boost the club’s coffers to the tune of £63,800.

He added: “All my friends and family are really looking forward to it.

“I had about 40 texts the day we found out we would be on television. I don’t think I have ever played a live game in front of the cameras before. I’m excited about it and there is a really good feel around the club.

“Everyone is buzzing. It’s something a bit different to the league and cup runs are always good.

“Normally we get knocked out pretty early on so we have to savour this game.

“You don’t get many of these chances so when they do come along you have to make the most of them.

“The match will bring in a lot of money and I’m sure the chairman is pretty happy about that.”

Prior to the Pilgrims’ visit, Dorchester Town entertain Tonbridge Angels in league action this weekend with Gleeson set to make his 275th appearance for the club.
