PHIL Simkin reckons Danny Green has the potential to become one of the best signings he has ever made.

The Dorchester Town boss made the admission on Saturday after the debutant completely turned the tables at Loop Meadow to move his side into the first round proper of the FA Trophy.

Trailing 1-0 to lower-league Didcot Town, Simkin took the bold decision to bring Green off the bench and push him up front, and it did the trick as he went on to grab two superb goals in the second half.

The delighted manager told Echosport: “The start of the game was a bit bizarre in a way.

“The sun was smack bang in our eyes and on winning the toss they used it in their favour.

“In fact, at one stage, I looked towards their goal and couldn’t even see their keeper it was that strong but although it proved a big factor in the first half, Didcot also showed they are a very good side.

“That is only the fourth time they have lost in their last 18 home games and all those defeats have come against higher league opposition.

“They gave us a real test and at 1-0 down we were really staring down the barrel.

“We also had one or two that were still physically hungover from the FA Cup win against Plymouth Argyle last Sunday and we knew that was always going to be a problem. So we changed things around and brought Danny on and there is no doubt he is going to be one of the best signings I have ever made for any club.

“Although he played at full-back at Truro City we moved him up front with Ben Watson and his finishes for the two goals were fantastic.”

When asked what prompted him to deploy Green in attack, Simkin added: “I just know what a good player he is and how fit he is.

“I also felt he could be effective up there and I am just so delighted for him.

“To come on and have such a big impact was just incredible and I really do believe he is someone that we are either going to sell for a lot of money one day, or will go on to make over 500 appearances – he really does have that much potential.”

The Magpies are also close to adding another new face to their squad, who could be in place in time to feature in the league clash at Havant & Waterlooville tomorrow night (7.45pm).

Simkin added: “We need to get some points on the board in the league now and hopefully we can do that.

“The squad is growing slowly and I am hoping to make another signing early this week. In fact, there is a chance it could even happen in time for tomorrow night.

“Everyone is happy at the moment and we just need to try and keep the momentum going.”

The Didcot win has added another £4,000 to the Magpies’ coffers and at lunchtime today they will find out who they face in the next round.
