Skipper Anderson set for Upwey return

SKIPPER Phil Anderson is set to return for Upwey & Broadwey tomorrow (2pm) when his side hosts Piddletrenthide United in the Dorset Senior League.

Despite sitting five places below their visitors in 10th, Steve Reynolds’ men go into the encounter at Redlands on the back of two 5-1 drubbings of Sturminster Marshall and Weymouth Sports.

Add to that the fact Piddletrenthide were routed 6-1 by Gillingham Town Res-erves in their last outing and it would seem the league table stands for nothing.

However, those wins for Upwey & Broadwey came at the start of November and December respectively meaning the club has played just twice in the last two months because of the wet weather.

“We’re looking forward to it, I think we’ve forgotten what a football looks like,” joked Reynolds. “At least with the time off the players carrying knocks have had a chance the rest.

“Our captain had an injury scare before Christmas with a groin problem. He missed a couple of games but has had a rest and should be back.

“Most players are available apart from Darren Samways, who is serving the second of a three-game ban, and Pete Jarvis is unavailable.”

Even though they are lying fourth in the table, Portland United Reserves have gone five matches without tasting success and lost the last three.

Their most recent setback came against the side they face tomorrow, bottom-of-the-table Sturminster Marshall, so it will be an ideal opportunity to exact some revenge for that 3-0 loss on December 15.

To compound their misery, that win for Sturminster was their first of the season and came on the back of 10 straight defeats.

Another club that could do with a new year’s boost is Weymouth Sports, who are languishing in 12th place and entertain Westland Sports.

There has been no win in four for the Weymouth outfit but they too are seriously lacking in game time over the last month or so. Unbeaten league leaders Mere Town should be too strong for struggling Okeford United.
