Dynamic Devaney shines for Upwey

ETHAN Devaney was back to his best as Upwey & Broadwey hammered Piddletrenthide 7-1 in the Dorset Senior League.

The fleet-footed forward grabbed a brace in a fantastic all-round display that had his manager singing his praises at the final whistle.

Upwey boss Steve Reynolds said: “Ethan has not had the greatest of seasons so far but in this game he was back to his best.

“They all played well but head and shoulders above everyone else were Ethan and Richard Frost, who were both outstanding.

“We also had Adam Anstey available and his organising at the back was another big feature along with his surging runs that saw him have a hand in the majority of the goals.

“It was just a good all-round display and hopefully we can now take this performance into the next game.”

Piddle began the encounter a lot better than their opponents so it was a surprise when they fell behind.

A long ball out of defence found Devaney and when he somehow turned the ball into the path of Ty Young with an audacious piece of skill, the burly striker made no mistake with a sweet strike with the outside of his right boot, which left the visiting keeper with no chance.

Following that breakthrough, Upwey slowly began to take control and by half-time they were 4-0 in front.

A defender turned a driven cross from Sam Nichols into his own net to double the lead before a trip on Anstey saw Charlie Kenderine make it three from the spot.

To their credit, United continued to battle but when Jason Pearce and Frost combined to set up Devaney for another goal just before the break it already looked like game over.

Devaney then made it 5-0 with a cheeky chip early in the second half before the away side finally got on the score-sheet themselves following a sloppy back-pass from Ben Porteous.

That consolation goal did nothing to upset the momentum though as Upwey went on to complete the victory with two more.

Kenderdine slotted home another penalty following a foul on Ty Young before Frost crowned his remarkable performance by netting a rebound for the seventh.

The result has lifted Upwey up to eighth and, with games in hand on six of the seven teams above them, Reynolds will be hoping they can continue this form in the weeks ahead.

Next up for the Weymouth outfit is a third round tie against Okeford United in the Dorset Senior Trophy this Saturday.
