PORTLAND LIONS 7 GEORGE JEWELS 0

PORTLAND Town Lions closed the gap at the top of the Weymouth Sunday League Champ-ionship with a 7-0 triumph over George Jewels.

The Lions, playing in their first league game since November, dominated from start to finish with Justin Faulkner leading the way with four well-taken goals.

Two pitch inspections were held before the action finally got underway and it did not take long for Faulkner to open the scoring with a simple finish at the far post.

Matt Brown then doubled the lead with a screamer before Faulkner grabbed his second with a flick-on from a free-kick.

The Jewels continued to battle but when Elliot Gould made it 4-0 just prior to the break the game was all but over.

A handball in the box then presented Faulkner with a penalty for his hat-trick, which he duly dispatched early in the second half, before Brown made it six.

The Lions could have easily eased off in the later stages but there was still time for one more with Faulkner wrapping up the scoring with another fine finish to move his side to within one point of leaders Dolphin.

Portland boss Ben White said: “The boys played really well, especially man-of-the-match Phil Lee and debutant Craig Wells.

“We also broke two club records including most league games without defeat and most games without defeat in all competitions.

“Having broken this record I would also like to thank the former management team of Dave Price and Loz Tonkin and the players of course for getting the Lions to where they are now.”

All the other fixtures in the Weymouth Sunday League were postponed due to adverse weather.
