BEES: Bridport captain Ryan Hayter looking for upturn in league form
BRIDPORT skipper Ryan Hayter wants his team-mates to take their cup form into the league, starting tomorrow at the Rapid Solicitors Ground in Bitton (3pm).
Goals from Tom Richardson and Ryan Dovell sent the Bees through to the FA Cup preliminary round last weekend, giving Hayter’s men their first win of the season following two league reverses.
But if they want to overcome Bitton in the Toolstation Western Premier Division tomorrow they will have to do it without the strike duo, who are out through suspension and injury respectively.
Dovell is set to miss the next four to six weeks with a groin problem and Richardson serves the first of a three-game ban – that could mean a chance up front for Sam Charles.
Hayter knows that the Bees, apart from the cup triumph at Hengrove, haven’t played near their full potential yet and hopes they can turn their league fortunes around at Bitton.
“We had a really good pre-season and were expecting to carry that into the league,” he said. “I don’t think we have played anywhere near our potential and things haven’t really gone for us so far.
“All the players would probably agree that we haven’t played as well as we know we can, but hopefully we can build on the FA Cup game and take that form into the league this weekend.
“It looks like Ryan Dovell will be missing through injury and Tom Richardson is suspended so it’s going to be hard with our two main strikers out.
“But it will give Sam Charles a chance to step up and he is a really good player who has been unlucky with injuries.”
He went on to add: “The season hasn’t started as well as we would have liked but winning in the cup last Saturday was good, not just for the team, but for the club in terms of revenue.
“Playing Merthyr in the next round means more income for the club and they always bring a big away support with them.”
While Bridport are waiting to get off the mark in the league, Bitton have picked up four points, including a 1-0 win over Radstock Town.
Midfielder Dan Wise is available and Charles, Ashley Staines, Alan Hill and Darren Lock come into the squad while Darren Watts and Chris Senior are also out.
