MAGPIES: Phil Simkin to cast eye over reserves
PHIL Simkin could turn to the club’s reserves in a bid to bolster a first-team squad which is set to be missing a couple of key players this weekend.
Reigning Wyvern Premier League champions Sholing take on the Magpies’ second string tonight (7.45pm) with Simkin set to keep a close eye on the county town side’s performance.
Loan signing Aristide Bassele was added to Simkin’s ranks ahead of last Saturday’s Skrill South game at Concord, while fellow Bournemouth loanee Bra-ndon Goodship has one match left before returning to the Cherries.
Both Alan Walker-Harris and Charlie Clough are suspended for the visit of Bishop’s Stortford to the Avenue this Saturday, and there are also a couple of bumps and bruises among the rest of the squad too.
And with the reserves having made such a good start to their campaign with two wins from two, Simkin may well be tempted to give youth a chance this weekend.
Speaking to Echosport after seeing his side lose to a late goal at Concord, Simkin said: “We’ll prepare as best as we can for the next game and I’ll have a look at the reserves on Tuesday.
“There are some very good footballers in the reserves so I will see if there are any options there for me.”
On his loan signings, he added: “Brandon has done really well for us and he is a great lad.
“I think Aristide will be a bit different and defenders are going to find it difficult to knock him off the ball.
“He played the full 90 at Concord and I was really pleased with his debut.”
The reserves are top of the table on six points with Sholing following up a 5-0 thrashing of AFC Portchester with a 2-1 defeat at Eastleigh.
