STOKE LANE ATH LADIES 3 WEYMOUTH LADIES 3
AN extremely young Weymouth Ladies squad secured a well-deserved point in a six-goal thriller at Stoke Athletic in the South West League Premier Division.
The visiting ranks that made the trip to Bristol included six 16-year-olds in a total of 11 teenagers, but they certainly rose to the challenge in what was a fantastic spectacle.
Stoke took the lead against the run of play when Weymouth keeper Beth Smith was beaten by an unstoppable shot from distance midway through the first half but the lead did not last long.
Weymouth came storming back and after a number of chances went begging it was Jess Turk that grabbed the equaliser with a neat finish.
The encounter was now swinging from end to end and just prior to half-time two more goals were shared.
Once again it was Stoke that forged ahead with a rebound before Jody Urwin made it 2-2 with a fabulous strike from just outside the box.
With Weymouth’s emphasis this season being strictly on development, the likes of Ellie Howard, Georgia Taylor, Sharni Butcher, Annie Redding and Becci Vallard were playing integral parts, and it was the latter that finally put the visitors ahead for the first time.
Utilising her pace the youngster broke through before showing great composure to fire the ball into the back of the net, much to Stoke’s dismay.
It appeared that would be enough but in the dying stages the hosts were awarded a controversial free-kick on the edge of the box which they took full advantage of to tie the game up once more.
Weymouth, who are sponsored by Cafe Oasis, make their home league bow on Sunday when they entertain Cheltenham Town at Weymouth College (2pm).
The match is being sponsored by Nantes Solicitors.
