FOOTBALL: In-form Welch strikes as the Chickens dig in
WESTLAND SPORTS 0 CHICKERELL UNITED 2
STEVE Welch was on target again for the Chickens as they recorded a hard-fought victory at Westland Sports.
The in-form player took his tally for the season to six goals in two games with a fine strike in the first half before the returning Josh Why wrapped up the triumph in the closing stages.
Chickerell boss Steve Coward told Echosport: “It wasn’t the prettiest of games but the lads dug in and showed great character to come out on top.
“Due to people being away, we had to make seven changes to the squad but the lads put in a great all-round performance and kept their discipline throughout in what was a very scrappy contest.
“Steve gave us the lead with another good finish before Josh scored on his return to the club after one of their defenders collided with his goalkeeper in the last five minutes.
“It was another good win but it was also only our second game so we are not getting excited just yet.
“Having said that the atmosphere in the dressing room is really good and our fitness levels are excellent too, so there is a lot to feel encouraged about.”
Chickerell are one of just three teams that continue to hold a 100 per cent record in the Dorset Senior League where they currently sit second, just behind Corfe Mullen on goal difference.
Chickens: Boore, Coles, S Lambert, Green, Guilbert, Ferguson, D Welch, Falcus (Bill 80), S Welch, Why, Rawlings. Sub not used: M Lambert.
