FOOTBALL: Blues hit six to take top spot
PORTLAND UTD 6 HAMWORTHY UTD RES 1
JOE Toghill’s hat-trick helped send the Blues to the top of the Dorset Premier League at Grove Corner.
Hamworthy Recreation’s defeat away to Parley Sports gave reigning champions Portland an opening and they took it with both hands.
A superior goal difference sees Portland occupy first place in the league table ahead of Merley Cobham Sports, who have played a game more.
Tom Carter, Lewis Clarke and Alex Halloran also found the net after the visitors had taken the lead in the first half.
Carter, Andy Harris, Ross Carmichael and Ashley Smith all returned to the Blues’ line-up after missing the Parley draw.
The visitors went in front on 20 minutes but it didn’t take long for the Blues to get back on level terms when Toghill’s corner looped straight over the Hamworthy keeper.
Toghill turned provider for his side’s second, Carter coming in round the back at another corner to make it 2-1.
Soon after it was 3-1 when Toghill cut in from the right and drilled in his second of the afternoon, then the points were all but sealed before the break as Lewis Clarke hit a screamer from outside the box.
Clarke nearly added a fifth early in the second period and with a number of free-kicks being awarded the game became a stop-start affair.
It was 5-1 when Ben Doidge was brought down in the area and Toghill converted from the spot to complete his treble.
The final blow came from Halloran with 15 minutes to go as he took the ball onto his left foot and fired into the roof of the net.
“We were a bit disappointed after the draw against Parley but their win over Hamworthy Rec puts that into perspective,” said Blues assistant boss Derek McKay.
“Things got a bit scrappy in the second half on Saturday but all the goals were of great quality and that is really pleasing.
“We’ve got some important games coming up and we just need to build a bit of momentum.”
Ben Doidge was forced off with an injury after an hour on Saturday but should be fit for the Blues’ Dorset Senior Cup tie at Parley.
And McKay is hopeful that Ed Bastic, Adam Linaker and Sanchez Jansz-Baker, who all missed the win over Hamworthy through injury, will be available.
Blues: Weeks, Carter (Newnham 70), Harris, Carmichael, B Doidge (Gould 60), Smith, Halloran, R Doidge, Toghill (Mutch 75), Whyton, Clarke
