FOOTBALL: Chickens closing in on the leaders
CORFE MULLEN UNITED 1 CHICKERELL UNITED 3
CHICKERELL United closed the gap on Dorset Senior League leaders Sturminster Marshall to one point with strike duo Josh Why and Elliot Stone both among the goals.
The returning Steve Welch also found the net on an afternoon that saw Spaniard Rafael Martin Perez make his debut for the Chickens.
After successive goalless draws three points was just what Steve Coward’s men needed to keep up the pressure on the team at the top of the table, who were without a fixture at the weekend.
“They were a good side,” said Coward of Corfe Mullen. “They knocked the ball around nicely and we did well to cope with what they had.
“It was probably one of our best performances of the season and it was good to see the two lads up front get goals.
“Corfe played the better football to start with but, after Josh took his opportunity, we looked more confident as the game went on.
“We led 1-0 at half-time then Elliot battled for the ball on halfway, took it on and scored with a great finish.
“They got one back when their big centre-back came up from defence and made it 2-1, but Steve got our third 15 minutes from the end.”
And Coward had plenty of good things to say about his new Spanish signing, who hails from Madrid and works as an au pair in Weymouth.
“It took a few weeks to sign him and I think he is going to be a massive plus for the club,” added Coward. “He is a very good central midfielder and I’m pleased he is on board with us.
“He took a little bit of time to get into the game on Saturday but once he did, he played very well.”
