WEYMOUTH could remain in the top flight of the Dorset Funeral Plan League next season.

The Seasiders finished second-from-bottom in the summer and were due to get relegated but with speculation linking Winton with a move to the Hampshire League next year, the Redlands outfit could be handed a reprieve.

Matt Lawes, who skippered Weymouth this year, said: "It is a possibility but nothing has been confirmed as yet so as far as we are concerned we are in Premier Two until we hear otherwise.

“The leagues have been reorganised for next year when there will be eight teams in each division.

“Each team will play each other twice and then each division will then be split into two groups with all the points from those initial games being carried over.

“The teams in the top four will then play each other twice more to decide who wins the title and gets promoted, and the same will happen with the bottom four to decide who gets relegated.”

Due to other commitments, Lawes has stood down as captain and handed the reins over to Kieron Womble for 2014 while John Ryan has become the club’s new chairman.

Weymouth finished just 19 points above Dorchester at the end of last season after winning their last two games.

The county town outfit will ply their trade in Premier Two.
