JASON Matthews admitted a desire for more experienced heads in his side after the Terras felt the full force of the Hemel Hempstead juggernaut.

Weymouth were blown away in the first half at Vauxhall Road in Hertfordshire on Saturday, with Hemel striker Ben Mackey’s hat-trick helping the hosts to a 4-0 lead.

Terras’ captain Stewart Yetton scored a consolation for the visitors after the break, while the Tudors could even afford to miss a penalty on their way to an emphatic victory.

Pleased with how his men stuck at it in the second period, Terras’ player-manager Matthews recognises the need to strengthen his squad if he wants them to be more of a force next season.

However, with finances being as they are, youth could be the way forward.

Matthews said: “That’s the way we may have to go with certain budget restraints.

“I would like to bring in a bit more experience but, at the moment, it’s not quite possible so we’ve got to work hard to get it right.

“We came up against a very good side on Saturday and they are where we want to be.

“They’ve set the benchmark this season. Their movement is superb and they can move the ball well.

“We did have a bit of a go in the second half but, at the end of the day, they got the better of us again.”

Commenting further on Calor Southern Premier leaders Hemel, he added: “They are the champions-elect.

“They pulverised us in the first half and Ben Mackey ran the show for them. I expected them to come at us and they didn’t disappoint me.

“He scored a couple of decent goals and it was always going to be an uphill task from the fourth minute onwards.

“I didn’t want us to roll over in the second half. Even though we were 4-0 down we had to keep our two banks of four. My lads stuck to their task and we dug in well.

“We’ve had a hell of a lot of games but now we’ve got a chance to regroup.

“We’ve played all the top sides now so it’s a case of getting as many wins as we can and building for next season.”

One plus point for Matthews was the performance on debut of new signing Jacob Jagger Cane, who joined the club last week.

“Jacob came in and did a superb job for us,” said Matthews. “He’s a little fox in the box and is good all around the pitch.”
