FOOTBALL: Bees pay penalty as lead is blown
BISHOP SUTTON 3 BRIDPORT 3
BRIDPORT’S failure to take their chances in front of goal and poor defending from set-pieces proved their downfall as they dropped two points at Bishop Sutton.
Despite missing several opportunities, the Bees looked set for back-to-back league wins when they led 3-1 at half-time thanks to Jamie Filkins’ opener and Ryan Dovell’s brace.
But two goals emanating from corners saw the hosts claim a share of the spoils, with the second, a penalty in the dying seconds, coming as the result of a challenge which saw Chris Luke sent off.
“We dominated the game throughout and deserved to win,” said Bridport captain Ryan Hayter. “Everyone was disappointed after because it felt like a defeat.
“We created a lot of clear-cut chances and should have been out of sight, but we didn’t put them away.
“They had three chances and put them all away, and their last two goals were from corners which were really badly defended.
“Before the last two games, if someone had offered us four points we would have taken them, but we should have had six.”
The Bees may have scored more on the night, but Hayter was impressed with the chances they did convert.
He added: “Jamie’s goal was absolute class. The ball was crossed in and he hit a half-volley into the top corner.
“Ryan scored with a free header right in front of goal from a Dan Wise cross, and then a long ball by Darren Watts found Ryan and he lifted it over the keeper.”
Filkins and Dovell put the Bees 2-0 up before the home side pulled a goal back. Dovell made it 3-1 in the 43rd minute and the visitors controlled the game after the restart until the hosts were allowed back into it.
