GEORGE Rigg is looking to impress at the Bob Lucas Stadium next season as he strives to attract attention from professional clubs.

The young midfielder, who was on the books at Stoke, Bristol City and Exeter before joining the Terras in January, is determined to reach his goal of playing back in the big time, but first he wants Weymouth to achieve “big things”.

“Obviously after being released by a professional club I want to work my way back up and Weymouth is a great club to do that with,” Rigg told Echosport.

“I am not going to give up on that yet, I just need to play games regularly and be as fit as I can because when you are fit you will perform well.

“Jason (Matthews) has said that Weymouth is a great club to be at to attract professional clubs and there have been previous players before that have gone on.

“Now I have signed a one-year deal and I am going to be there for the season, I really want to push on and do everything I can to achieve my goals.”

And while the 20-year-old is keen to impress potential suitors from the upper reaches of the football pyramid, he realises that with new signings added to the Terras’ ranks he will be pushed hard for a place in Jason Matthews’ starting XI.

But he will be doing everything he can to nail down a spot. He added: “We have a great side now with the new signings and there will be competition for places, but it will be good because it will help everybody.

“I am hoping to stamp my authority in the midfield and I am getting fit right now to try and be ready for it.

“I’m hoping to get some goals from centre midfield and hopefully I can reach double figures this season.

“I have a few other targets in mind that I want to get going with.

“I just need to work hard, which I do, give everything for the lads and give everything for myself as well.”

Rigg realises that the upcoming campaign is huge for the Terras and is backing the squad to secure a play-off berth while playing the positive football that manager Matthews is looking to implement.

He added: “We have a few pre-season games coming up so hopefully we can bond and gel quickly to what Jase wants, and I think he has brought in players who can do that as well.

“I think the play-offs should be our aim and all the lads are thinking that as well, it should be a good season ahead for us.”
