SCOTT Walker has bid an emotional farewell to Weymouth, as the midfielder revealed to Echosport that he has officially left the club.

The former Terras’ captain, who spent two-and-a-half years at the Bob Lucas Stadium, rejected a revised contract offer but took the time to wish manager Jason Matthews and his squad all the best for the next Southern Premier League campaign.

“I was not able to take the deal that they have offered me this year,” the veteran midfielder said.

“There were a few changes from my contract from last season and the offer that I was given this year was not something that I was able to commit to.

“I would like to thank everyone from the bus driver all the way through to Nigel Biddlecombe for everything, and hopefully they can fulfil their full potential next year.

“I will definitely miss the club. I have been there for two-and-a-half seasons and enjoyed every minute of it, the potential it has is endless.”

The 34-year-old was forced to sit out the majority of the second half of last season with an ongoing groin problem. And he believes his eagerness to get back into action had an adverse effect on the injury.

He added: “I went for an ultrasound scan recently and they told me there was at least an eight-millimetre tear in my groin and that is still after having two or three months of rest.

“It was a bit of my own stupidity to come back early rather than let the healing process work.

“At the end of the day it’s football and I’ve moved on.

“I have not signed for anyone and I have no-one in the pipeline at the moment.

“I am going to get myself physically fit and recover from my injury first and then who knows.”

And although Walker will not be a part of the Terras’ squad next term, he is backing the club to achieve big things in the long run.

“Weymouth Football Club should still be in the Conference, if not trying to push for the Football League,” he added.

“With the set up that they have got down there, the potential is huge. They have got huge support from the same faces that travel away every Saturday on the coach.

“It is great support and as long as they can be patient over the next couple of years who knows what’s going to happen.”

Weymouth boss Matthews also took the time to wish his former team-mate well.

He added: “Scott is a trooper and in different circumstances we would have kept him.

“He is still struggling with his groin and with the budget constraints this year I cannot afford to take a gamble.

“We are sad that he is leaving, he is a great lad and we wish him all the best for the future.”
