WEYMOUTH’S clash at St Neots Town tomorrow (3pm) could have the makings of a top-of-the-table contest in the grand scheme of things, although neither manager wants to get carried away this early in the campaign.

The Saints’ joint-boss Zema Abbey played down his side as title favourites before the start of the season, despite the bookmakers strongly tipping them as the team to claim the title.

And Matthews, whose side currently top the division after two games, were as short as second in the betting.

“It’s a big game but every game is big at this time of the season and I want to accumulate as many points as I can, as early as I can,” Matthews told Echosport.

“Pressure comes with doing well and it’s how you handle that pressure, we are enjoying things at the moment but it can all change very quickly in football.

“We just need to keep the lads fresh and hungry and that comes with competition for places, we move to Saturday nice and positive and hopefully we can keep it tight.”

St Neots have opened their account with a 2-0 win at Hereford and a dramatic 3-3 draw against Chesham having been three goals behind.

Like Matthews’ set-up, the Cambridgeshire club have also added a vast array of new faces to their ranks, including last season’s 64-goal strike duo Drew Roberts and Chris Dillon from Chesham, who both did not feature against their old club on Tuesday.

“I know a fair bit about them, we will treat them with respect and take it from there really,” Matthews added.

“It’s important that we pick up points away from home and we enjoy it, I think that if you enjoy your football you tend to play well.”

Ed Palmer is set to come back into the Weymouth squad, as is Tim Sills, who has served his suspension and, if selected, will make his first league appearance this term.

Matthews said: “It will be nice to have Tim available, he is going to have to fight for his place because the lads have done well in the last two games, he is a true professional and he will realise that. Even though he hasn’t played yet, he has been a great influence and a help to me.”
