AN incredible 49 goals were scored in the five matches played on the opening day of the Moby Dick’s-sponsored Weymouth Sunday League season.

Broadmayne hit eight, Dolphin and new club Dorothy scored nine, but New Star, formerly Britannia, outdid them all by smashing 10 past Alexandra.

Matt Ramsey got his reign as New Star boss off to a flyer with Simon True bagging a hat-trick at Grove Corner, while Stu Burley and Marcus Simpson got two each.

Burley set the ball rolling with a clinical finish on 15 minutes after being found by new signing Simpson.

A wonderful strike from Antony Carlile doubled the lead before True capped a mazy run with a drilled shot into the bottom corner.

Karl Edgar got in on the act with a shot that the opposition keeper should have dealt with, and then True scored his second just before the break to make it 5-0.

The Alex held their own early in the second period and John Foster capitalised on a rare defensive lapse to give them a glimmer of hope.

This got the Star going again and the last 13 minutes will be one that the Alex will want to for- get.

Simpson scored on his debut with a solo effort and, just two minutes later, True completed his hat-trick, man-of-the-match Rob Squibb providing the assist.

Simpson and Burley then achieved their braces and there was still time for Squibb to take the hosts to double figures.

Top scorer on match day one was Broadmayne’s William Tur-land who netted six times in his side’s 8-0 rout of new boys Weatherbury – Russell Harris and James Moynehan got the other goals.

Danny Andrews was another player on fire in front of goal, scoring five for Dorothy in a 9-0 thrashing of Junction Trojans, another new side to the league this term.

Six different players got on the scoresheet for Moby Dick’s in their entertaining 6-3 victory at home to Market House.

Robert Evans, Les Lewis, John Limm, William Mitchell, Luke Moorley and Nick Paul helped put the visitors to the sword at Budmouth School.

Finally, Josh Burton, Sean Gulliver, Ricky Lane and Ishmael Gonzalez were among the scorers for Dolphin in their 9-3 hammering of the Famous Old Spa.

n The league would like to thank sponsor Iain Turnbull of Moby Dick’s for once again supporting grassroots football in Weymouth.
