JASON Matthews is aiming to give Terras’ fans cup fever this season, as he leads Weymouth into the FA Cup for the first time as a manager at Mangotsfield United tomorrow (3pm).

The Terras continued their superb run in the Southern Premier League with their fourth-straight win at Chippenham on Tuesday, but the player-manager believes the historic competition is also a welcome challenge for his side.

“For me, it’s the greatest competition there is in football, and for a team of our level it definitely is, and it brings great excitement for everyone as long as we do the business,” he told Echosport.

“We need to apply ourselves in the right way for it because it is a massive game.”

Should Weymouth win tomorrow, they will receive a healthy financial boost of £3,000 and a place in the second qualifying round with £4,500 at stake, but Matthews remains focused on keeping his thoughts on the field, rather than on the finances.

He added: “It’s not predominately about the money, it’s about winning a game of football and we look forward to going to Mangotsfield. We know it’s going to be tough, it’s a small little pitch and it’s one of my former teams.

“I had good times at Mangotsfield and we got to the semi-final of the FA Vase when I was there, we lost in the last minute of extra time and it would have taken me to the old Wembley which is one of my dreams, but it wasn’t to be.”

Mangotsfield currently occupy 12th position in the Southern League South & West Division and overcame Cribbs 4-1 in the extra-preliminary round to book their home encounter with the Terras.

As well as bagging a brace on Tuesday evening to open his league account for the club, striker Tim Sills also picked up a slight hamstring niggle, which the club will monitor before they make the trip.

Matthews added: “We need to be ultra professional going there and nobody can afford to take their foot off the pedal, we need to keep up the level of performances we have put in at the likes of Cambridge City and Chippenham.

“If we conduct ourselves properly we should win the game, that’s no disrespect to Mangotsfield.”

Just three faces remain in the Terras’ ranks from the XI that started when the club bowed out of the cup last season against Braintree.
