WEYMOUTH took their chance to close the gap on runaway league leaders Poole Town, as Jason Matthews’ men ran out emphatic 3-0 winners at Hitchin Town.

With the Dolphins’ scheduled league game against Burnham postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Tatnam on Saturday, the Terras reduced the deficit in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier League standings to just nine points between the sides, with the Terras still holding two games in hand.

“It was another outstanding performance and it sends out another statement about how keen these players are,” Matthews, whose side are due to lock horns with Poole on November 25, told Echosport.

“We went out there with Poole’s game postponed and it’s another game that we have caught up on them now.

“It keeps us in the top five and I think a lot of the teams up there are in the FA Trophy as well as us next week, so it gives us another breather now.”

The Weymouth supermo also hailed the performance of Aldershot loanee Tristan Plummer, who made his first start for the club and bagged the opener at Top Field.

“He did well and took his chance, we have a good squad and it is nice to utilise it,” Matthews added.

“He gave us a little cutting edge but the other lads have done well as well so it’s good to have a little selection headache.

“I don’t want to single out anyone because all of my players have been outstanding and to go this far in the season only losing three games is testament to everyone at the club.”

The player-boss also shed further light on midfielder Luke Winsper’s dual registration deal with Sherborne Town, as the midfielder scored the second goal in the Zebras 3-0 league win over Slimbridge at the weekend.

The Weymouth chief added: “Luke has gone on dual registration and he just needs a few games to get match fit. I had 17 players in my squad so it was an ideal chance for him to get 90 minutes under his belt. He scored and they won 3-0 so it was a good day all round.”
