NEW Star Inn progressed to the quarter-final stages of the Dorset Sunday Intermediate Cup with an emphatic 6-1 away victory against the Alex at Budmouth.

Star fully deserved their victory despite a frantic opening 15 minutes in tough conditions.

With the visitors struggling to settle, the Alex had the better of the opening exchanges and found themselves a goal to the good on 10 minutes after breaking the away side’s offside trap.

Both teams then enjoyed scoring opportunities and Star stopper Martin Rutland made a string of good saves to keep his team in it.

And although the next goal could have gone either way, it was Star that equalised when Dan Campbell-Bell’s corner was delivered on to the head of Stu Burley, who was on hand to put the ball home.

That settled Star down somewhat, and just three minutes later they took the lead through a Rob Squibb volley, his fifth of the campaign.

On 38 minutes, Burley then threaded a lovely through ball to strike partner Simon True, who kept his head to side-foot past the Alex keeper to make it 3-1 at the break.

Four minutes after the restart, Star made then added their fourth when Burley latched on to an under-strength back-pass for his 17th of the season.

Phil Smith-Jones was then introduced for Star and, playing his first competitive game for the club, he got on the scoresheet on 72 minutes when his shot proved too powerful for the Alex keeper to handle.

Antony Carlile then rounded off a dominant display when he hit the sixth 12 minutes from time.

New Star Inn will now face Market House at the Marsh on December 14 for the chance to reach the semi-finals.

Elsewhere in the competition, Broadmayne were thumped 10-0 by Bournemouth League outfit Abbey. Dorothy overcame AFC Wimborne 5-3 and the Market House beat hosts Weatherbury 2-0.

Dolphin also overcame Sail-or’s Return 7-6 in a 13-goal thriller which went to extra time.
