CHRIS McPhee firmly believes that the Terras’ FA Trophy exit at Havant & Water-looville won’t have an effect on their league form when they return to action this weekend.

A 5-0 reverse in Hampshire on Tuesday night ended Weymouth’s dreams of a trip to Wembley, but midfielder McPhee reckons the result wasn’t a true reflection of the game.

All the cup football the Terras have had of late has, according to McPhee, not been great for their promotion quest, but he feels Saturday’s home encounter with Biggleswade is a great opportunity for them to push on.

“It’s always nice to have a good run in the cup competitions, it’s just that with all the cup games we’ve had, and replays, we have slipped behind in our league schedule,” he said.

“We have got games in hand and are in a good position but if we would have had a few more league matches instead of worrying about cups then we might have had more points on the board.

“With that we could have put more pressure on the teams above us, but that is part and parcel of being a side that wants to go out and win every single game, regardless of what competition it is.”

He added: “Saturday’s home game is a cracking opportunity for us.

“Our home record speaks for itself and we’ll be confident going into another game on our own patch.

“There is no doubt the players will be ready to get back on track and Tuesday’s defeat won’t affect us in the league at all.”

Weymouth’s slow start on Tuesday allowed Havant to get on top and the Conference South side never looked back.

But while McPhee was disappointed with some of the goals the visitors conceded, he felt there were still positives to take.

“I just think we were slow out of the blocks,” he said. “We were slow to react when we didn’t have the ball and went behind early on.

“They took their chances and we were chasing the game, but we opened up Havant quite a few times and caused them a lot of problems.

“It definitely wasn’t a 5-0 game and we certainly deserved to score at least twice.

“We should have done better with their goals, but we weren’t a million miles away, even if the scoreline doesn’t suggest that.”

Stewart Yetton, taken off as a precaution in the second half at Havant to protect a slight groin problem, should be fine for Saturday.
