IT may be too soon for Jason Matthews to return at Truro City on Monday, but the Weymouth chief is well on the comeback trail.

The player-boss, who last featured between the sticks for Weymouth at Frome Town in March, rates himself as 50-50 to take his place in goal at Treyew Road, but will not be inclined to rush himself back from his ongoing groin injury.

He told Echosport: “I have made some good progress this week but I am quite wary because it is my groin, where I have had a problem before, and I’m not going to rush myself at such a vital stage.

“I would say I will definitely be fit for next Saturday. I just have to see how my groin reacts over the next few days.”

Goalkeeper Joe Wollacott will be part of the Weymouth squad for their clash with fellow promotion-chasers Truro, who are scheduled to travel to Redditch United today.

And with the Terras without a fixture this afternoon, Matthews believes members of his squad picked up some much-needed minutes during their 4-0 friendly win over Hamworthy United on Thursday.

Calvin Brooks, Chris Shephard, Steve Colwell and Jamie Beasley all found the net for the Terras against the Hammers.

“It was good for lads like Calvin, who is coming back from suspension, and it takes us into Monday quite nicely,” he added.

“I am not getting too over-excited because it was just a friendly but we gained a little bit of momentum going into the Truro game.”

Beasley was named among the substitutes in the first-team against Burnham last Saturday and Matthews admits the midfielder could make the trip to take on the White Tigers.

On his midweek strike, he added: “It went in the top corner and that’s what you get with Jamie, he has definitely got a goal in him and is one I will be keeping my eye on.

“I haven’t confirmed the squad for Monday yet, I know the majority but we will see how things go today in the reserves.”

Suspended duo Tim Sills and Dean Evans will both start three-game bans on Monday.
