JASON Matthews has revealed to Echosport that Weymouth favourite Trevor Challis will return to the club in an advisory role to aid him until the end of the season.

Former QPR defender Challis, who helped Weymouth to the Conference South title in his first season with the club, is currently part of the coaching staff at the Bristol City Academy but has decided to also help the Weymouth boss in the Terras’ bid for the play-offs.

He is set to take a place in the dugout for the club’s trip to Truro City on Easter Monday.

Matthews also revealed player-coach Chris McPhee will step up to a more prominent role in the squad’s training.

He told Echosport: “I am delighted to bring in Trevor to help me out for when I am back playing.

“He will come in on the sidelines for the remainder of the season and we will take it from there.

“He will be with me on Monday at Truro and Chris McPhee will have a bit more of a hands on role in training.

“I am really close with Trevor and he has a similar philosophy to me. He knows the club inside out from his previous time there and needs no introduction.”

The club’s agreement with Challis comes less than a week after former assistant-manager Craig Laird departed the Bob Lucas Stadium, agreeing to join Yate Town on Monday.

Laird was present in Weymouth’s 4-0 friendly win over Hamworthy United on Thursday and said goodbye to the players.
