DOLPHIN 6 FAMOUS OLD SPA 2 (AET)

DOLPHIN ended up cruising to victory in the final of the Dorset Sunday Intermediate Cup after taking the game to extra-time in dramatic fashion at Grove Corner.

The Spa, who edged out Dolphin for second place in the Weymouth Sunday League, looked as though they would lift the trophy when Chris Skinner put them 2-1 up right at the end of normal time.

But Dolphin threw defender Rob Maxted forward and he equalised with virtually the last kick of the 90 minutes.

That well and truly knocked the stuffing out of the Spa and Dolphin netted four more times in the extra half an hour.

The Dolphin management team of Callum Doughty and Josh Cowan then looked on as Dorset FA council member Phil Watson presented Sean Gulliver and Sheon McBride with the silverware.

Doughty and Cowan’s men had taken the lead through Gulliver in the first half when he forced home a Ricky Lane corner from close range.

However, Ash Hine equalised before the break as he cut in from the left flank and smashed a 20-yard strike past the Dolphin keeper.

The game went from end to end in the second period and both sides tried to play open and attacking football.

Just when it looked like the contest would end level at 1-1, Spa substitute Chris Skinner fired into the roof of the net from 15 yards to score what he and his team-mates thought was the winning goal.

But the drama wasn’t over and with seconds left Josh Houghton headed a long ball across goal and Maxted was there to make it 2-2.

And there was hardly time to restart the game before the referee blew the final whistle.

The Spa never recovered and Dolphin won easily in the end.

Lane added Dolphin’s third and fourth goals, the second of those coming via a Josh Burton cross.

Maxted got in on the act again, this time producing a superb strike from all of 20 yards which flew in the top corner.

And Burton put the seal on the win, controlling a Lane cross before hitting a first-time volley that nestled in the back of the net.
