STEVE Coward could still guide Chickerell United to a league and cup double tomorrow – but he won’t be giving his charges news throughout the afternoon from elsewhere that will influence their fate.

The Chickens, winners of the Dorset Senior Trophy on Tuesday, must get three points against Dorchester Sports at the Stalls (3pm) and hope that Gillingham Town Reserves beat leaders Holt United to seal the crown.

And while Coward admits he will be getting updates on the crucial encounter at Hardings Lane, he is keen to make sure his side is entirely focused on their job at hand.

He told Echosport: “We have got contacts that will be phoning through to us to tell us the score but I certainly won’t be telling the players what it is. That will be between me and the staff.

“The lads have just got to forget about Holt’s result, get on with their own and whatever happens will happen.

“I've spoken to someone who is involved at Gillingham and they are putting a strong side out. I don’t think there is any friendship between those two sides.

“Winning the cup on Tuesday was in our hands, this one is not. We just have to win the game and if we finish runners-up it’s still not a bad end to the season.”
