WEYMOUTH’S Luke Winsper is looking to put his bad luck with injury behind him for good this summer as he prepares to undergo an operation on a nagging foot problem.

Since suffering a broken metatarsal at Bashley in March 2014, the Terras’ midfielder has also felt the extreme discomfort of a trapped nerve in the same foot and attempted a course of injections in a bid to get his career back on track.

And while in the short term the injections were successful, another lapse in February has resulted in Winsper deciding to go under the knife next month.

“The operation is on June 29 and that will put me out for eight to 10 weeks before I can do anything after,” he told Echosport.

“It’s in the bottom of the foot. They basically have to cut into it and cut the nerve out, which means I won’t have feeling in two of my toes ever again.

“I had an injection in it which allowed me to play for six weeks but then the second injection didn’t work.

"I thought there was no point in having a third, I’d rather get the operation over and done with and try to get myself ready for next season.

“I thought I may as well write the season off because I knew I needed to get it done.”

Winsper is targeting a return to the Terras’ squad following the operation and insists that manager Jason Matthews is keen to have him on board.

The midfielder, who has not played since February, added: “I have spoken to Jase and he knows that I am probably going to be back in the middle of September.

“He has also said that he wants me to go and get some physio as soon as I can.

“It will probably be a case of me going out on loan or on a dual registration to get my fitness back to start with.

“But Jase definitely wants me to be there next season, which I am really happy about.

“Next season is a big one now because I need to get myself fit, stay fit, and prove myself to Jason.”
