MIDFIELDER George Rigg is looking to rectify the heartbreak Weymouth felt last season, even though he admits he could have possibly played at a higher level next term.

The Terras went from title-challengers to finishing outside of the play-off places with a dismal run of form during the latter half of the 2014/15 campaign.

But with former Bristol City man Rigg set to stay at the Bob Lucas Stadium after penning a fresh one-year deal, he believes those who have also committed their futures are chomping at the bit to do better.

Commenting on his new deal, the 21-year-old told Echosport: “To be honest, I probably could have played in the Conference South next season but I wanted to stay at Weymouth.

“As a team, with what we have together, I didn’t want to risk not having that somewhere else.

“I spoke to Jase and he obviously wanted me to stay, as well as the chairman, and it was a no-brainer really.

“I just wanted to spend another season here and see if we can put right where we went wrong.

“We have a talented group and we came up short. For next season we are another year older and we will learn from it because it was a tough time that we went through as a group.”

And making his decision to remain with the Terras, the midfielder admitted the club’s stature and fan base played a big part.

He added “I spoke to a couple of other clubs but I wanted to stay at Weymouth really. They are much bigger than most clubs in the Conference South anyway.

“The fans are the best I have ever seen at that standard and probably at Conference South standard as well. Nobody will top them.

“All year the fans were quality for us, even when things weren’t going well and even away from home the support was great. That is something we want to repay them for next season.

“As long as we have all their support, hopefully that will see us through and we will do something good.”
