PORTLAND Town’s inaugural five-a-side competition took place at the Billiardsboutique.com Bowl.

More than 60 of the island club’s players lined up to take part in an event that raised more than £400 to boost the island outfit's coffers.

There were seven teams in total, managed by Jamie Coleman, Mike O’Donovan, Pete Williams, John Chester, Craig Gale, Paul Barber and Rowan Forty.

After the group stages, both Chester and Williams’ teams qualified from group A of the competition, while Barber and Gale’s squad’s made the top two in group B.

This meant Williams’ men played Gale’s outfit in the semi-finals. Gale’s side prevailed in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.

The tournament's other last-four clash was also decided on spot-kicks.

And it was Paul Barber’s troops who came out on top with keeper Garry Gale scoring the winning penalty in sudden death.

However, the final was a one-sided affair with Barber’s team running out 6-2 winners.

There was a hat-trick for Moses Lewis, along with one goal each for Alex Counter, Josh Basquil and Josh Camp. Replying for Gale’s runners-up were Paul Cole and Cameron Marsh.

The winners of the competition walked away with a cup and also scooped £100 in cash.

Event organisers Andy Barber and Garry Gale said: “Every game was played in great spirits and to raise more than £400 is incredible.

“All teams played their part and we want to thank each and every one of them.”
