FORMER Weymouth goalkeeper Matt Cafer has decided to head back to Gibraltar and continue his quest for success overseas.

The 20-year-old gloveman, who featured as a trialist for Torquay United during the Terras’ 125th Anniversary Tournament earlier this month, has agreed a deal in principal to stay with Gibraltar Premier League side College Europa.

His return to the Bob Lucas Stadium came while he was back in Weymouth on holiday after featuring for College in the Europa League first qualifying round, where they were knocked out of the competition by Slovan Bratislava.

Tied in with the fact the Gulls won the pre-season event with Cafer in their ranks, he claims that sparked the Gibraltar club to get the shot-stopper tied down for next term.

Commenting on his return to Weymouth, Cafer, who had captained the Terras from under-12 to under-16 level, told Echosport: “I really loved it. It makes it hard to come back (to Gibraltar) but, when you look at it from the other way, I left London in the pouring rain and got back at 27 degrees at 10pm!

“I was back in the UK after the Europa League games and my agent got hold of me and asked if I wanted to get some minutes under my belt while I was home.

“It was nice to be back and strange to play against Weymouth for once instead of for them. If they have to lose against someone I’d rather it would be me! It was good to see some of the lads and see some of my friends from the outside world too.

“The club I was at last year found out that I had played in the tournament.

“They spoke with my agent and, when he ran the offer by me, it was just something you wouldn’t turn down.”

Cafer also revealed that the lure of a possible step onto the international stage was a big factor in him heading back to the Mediterranean.

“I have another year until I can get my nationality for Gibraltar and we will see what goes from there,” he claimed.

“That could obviously open a lot more doors for me if I can get playing for the national squad.

“I can apply in about six to eight months and it’s to the discretion of the Gibraltar FA. Obviously if they think I can help them they are more likely to say yes.

“It was something that was in the back of my head.”

But for now, the former Yeovil Town man will be looking to get back into pre-season abroad and prepare for the start of the Gibraltar Premier League campaign.

He added: “I think our first game is late August sometime. We have a few good friendlies against the likes of Malaga and other teams in Spain.”
