JASON Matthews believes penalty supremo Jordan Copp “stepped up to the plate” in the Terras 4-1 win over Paulton Rovers, and not just from the spot.

Matthews was impressed by the former Plymouth Argyle youngster’s all-round display, as well as his two strikes from 12 yards last night, and insists he has staked his claim for a regular starting place.

“He (Copp) needs to be on the pitch and I felt that his contribution in open play was very good as well,” the Weymouth player-manager told Echosport.

“I was frustrated with his impact when he came on on Saturday and we have told him that.

“But last night he stepped up to the plate and has staked his claim. I am really loyal, the boys know that and he will get another chance on Saturday.

“On the penalty situation, Yetts picked it up confidently on Saturday but didn’t take it greatly. He admitted that himself.

“I have two or three people now who have said they want to take them, one of them being Coppy.”

Speaking about the performance itself, Weymouth’s first league win of the campaign, Matthews was ecstatic with his side’s display.

He added: “I thought that the attitude was spot on. We got our tactics right and what was really pleasing was that when we went 1-0 down sloppily from a set-piece, we never let our heads go down.

“At half-time, after the way we had passed the ball, I felt Paulton were never going to be able to keep up with that tempo. They were chasing shadows and, as deep as they were, we broke them down superbly.”

Matthews also gave an update on George Rigg's fitness, after he suffered a back problem.

“He will go for a x-ray. Hopefully he should be okay,” he claimed.
