WHILE Portland United manager Gary Bailey was ecstatic by the Blues’ start to their Sydenhams Wessex One campaign, he will be keeping his squad’s feet on the ground.

After thumping Fleet Spurs 6-1 last Saturday, the island outfit make the trip to Romsey Town tomorrow (3pm), the side that finished second from bottom in the division last season.

“We have set the bar pretty high for ourselves but we aren’t going to win 6-1 every week,” Bailey told Echosport.

“We realise that and it’s just a case of doing what we do well and seeing what happens.

“We know we are probably going to have weekends where we may come up against teams that are just better than us, and they will beat us.

“We must not get carried away.”

Defender Ross Carmichael is unavailable for the Grove Corner club’s next two fixtures and is likely to be the only absentee going into Portland’s clash at the Bypass Ground.

Speaking about their next test, the Blues’ chief added: “I am trying to instil into the players that we have to prepare like every game is going to be our toughest game.

“If we go in with that attitude and we conduct ourselves in the right way then we stand a good chance.

“A lot of these places the players haven’t played at before and they are looking forward to it.

“That’s what we have to expect with the step up. In a way it is nice to have that different type of pressure on ourselves.”
