MAGPIES’ defender Nathan Walker was left humbled after Saturday’s end-of-season defeat to Kettering Town as he picked up two awards for his performances over the course of the campaign.

The versatile player won both the supporters’ player of the year accolade as well as the Dorset Echo player of the year.

When picking up the trophies, he was warmly received by the cheering Magpies’ fans and afterwards he told Echosport that it meant a lot to win the awards.

WhilE juggling his trophies, he said: “I knew I had a good year playing out of position but it’s not about me it’s about the team.

“Jem (Mark Jermyn, manager) has asked me to play up front and I’ve done a good job and I’ve been rewarded with the trophies, which was very nice.

“It means a lot, every time you win a trophy it means a lot.

“I’ve been here for a long time now and this is the first time I’ve picked up the Dorset Echo player of the year and the Supporters’ player of the year trophies and it is pleasing.”

With the season coming to a close, Walker is looking forward to some downtime before he returns for another season at the Avenue.

“I’ve got a couple of holidays and then it is back for pre-season so I’ve got to stay fit.

“I’m getting older now so I need some time to relax.”

Despite picking up the accolades, Walker insists his teammates were as much to do with the awards as he was.

He explained: “Everything in football is about the team and the trophies I’ve won are a credit to myself but if it wasn’t for my team-mates then I would not be able to win them.

Walker, who spent the conclusion of the season as stand-in captain, also saluted the fans who he feels have been brilliant all season long.

“The fans have also been amazing this year,” he added the support we’ve had home and away has been outstanding.

“I look forward to coming back next year and progressing, just as we have this season.”
