DORCHESTER Town have announced the signing of striker Mario Mateus from Paulton Rovers on a one-year deal.

The forward has been in talks with Magpies’ manager Mark Jermyn throughout the summer after impressing him when playing against the county town side for Rovers, who were relegated from the Evo-Stik Southern Premier League, last season.

He has taken part in all of Dorchester’s pre-season training sessions and Jermyn feels Mateus will be a hit at the Avenue.

Talking about his new signing, Jermyn told Echosport: “We’re really pleased to have him on board. He has only been with us for two sessions but already he has fitted in with the rest of the squad.

“I think he is going to enjoy his time here and we are going to enjoy having him.

“He made a massive impression on us in the game last season and already he has shown some great things in just two sessions.”

Mateus becomes the second forward to be signed by the Magpies this summer, joining Ben Wood, who signed last month from Bideford.

Jermyn is hoping the pair can bring some added firepower alongside stalwart Nathan Walker.

He added: “Mario has great ability, he can go past people, he has a great strike on him and he has great pace.

“He will fit into our side nicely with the way we want to play next season. With Ben (Wood) and Mario on either side of Nathan (Walker), they are two rockets so it should benefit us and them with the formation.

“As long as they can collectively add to the goals and they score a few goals, then we’re not setting them any targets.

“There’s no point putting those pressures on people, because last season we proved that we could get goals from everywhere and I hope that is the case this season.

Jermyn is still looking for some more fresh faces, but he feels, with this addition, his squad is taking shape.

He explained: “In the next two weeks we should know what we will be starting with next season.

“The future looks good. We’re really pleased with what we’ve got. We’re quietly confident.

“We just need to make sure everyone is working towards the same target and that by the start of the campaign we are ready to go.”
