JASON Matthews is eager for his Terras’ side to recapture their ruthlessness in front of goal quickly, as they get set for FA Cup action at the Bob Lucas Stadium tomorrow.

National League South outfit Gosport Borough are Weymouth’s second qualifying round opposition in the cup (3pm) and are set to provide a difficult task for the hosts, who drew a blank in a 1-0 loss to Slough Town last time out.

The Terras are one of five teams that are the joint lowest scorers in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division at present, with just nine goals coming from as many league games.

Gosport striker Warren Bentley already has seven goals to his name individually in the league above.

Boss Matthews admitted following the loss to Slough that a lack of goals had been his side’s “Achilles heel” in the campaign so far.

Quizzed further on the problem, he told Echosport: “We have been very neat and tidy but haven’t hurt any teams in the final third. It’s something we need to address and put right.

“Although we have had a lot of the ball we haven’t created out-and-out chances all season.

“We have had lots of possession in all of the games and not scored enough. Obviously that is a little bit of a concern but I don’t necessarily blame the strikers. I think that the strikers have worked really hard and it’s incredibly frustrating at the moment.”

He added: “We just have to keep working and we have done a little bit more work on it in training. We just have to keep being positive.

“We have asked the boys to shoot on sight and I felt we got four or five shots off on Tuesday night but they didn’t trouble the keeper enough. That has been the story of the season for us so far.”

Giving his thoughts on Gosport, who he had scouted on Tuesday evening during their 4-0 defeat to Bath City, Matthews added: “It’s a welcome bit of relief from the league and I am really looking forward to going into a cup game against a good Gosport side.

“They have some good players and it’s a chance for us to try and kick on and get a good little cup run together. I would love that.

“They are a tidy side and try to play football, which should suit us. There will be two teams that try to play good football and it will be a tough test for us.”

Weymouth are set to include both Jordan Copp and Mark Molesley in their squad for tomorrow’s clash in which £4,500 in prize money is up for grabs.

n The Terras' reserves visit Romsey Town in Sydenhams Wessex Division One tomorrow (3pm).
