PORTLAND United boss Gary Bailey feels there is a palpable excitement around Grove Corner as the Blues get set to end their decade-long wait for a Buildbase FA Vase tie tomorrow (3pm).

The islanders go up against Toolstation Western Division One’s bottom club Almondsbury UWE in the second qualifying round and the manager can’t wait to get started.

He told Echosport: “It’s an exciting time. There has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes to get this club back into these national competitions.

“Lewis Whyton and Ross Doidge played in the Vase for us 10 years ago and they’re really excited to see it back again.

“Most of the players haven’t played in it and it’s really nice that the players can experience it.”

Former Bridport coach and now Bailey’s assistant, Mark Carter, has come up against the university side before, giving the Blues an idea of how their opponents will play.

The boss explained: “We don’t know much about them this year but we know their philosophies over recent years. Much like Team Solent it all relies on their recruitment.

“We have to respect them and expect a tough test.”

Alex Halloran is back available for Portland and Ross Doidge could make a comeback from a knee injury.

Carl Morris and Carl Mutch will both miss the clash and Sean Bessant is still three weeks away from full fitness.

The Blues are hoping for a packed house tomorrow, and Bailey feels his side’s support has been the best in the league this season.

He remarked: “The supporters are fantastic. They have been great all season and hopefully a few casual fans will come along and give us a cheer.

“The ground is improving, the pitch is in great condition and that’s testament to the people who work hard off the pitch and it’s why we are being successful.

“It’s a great place to play your football.”

Portland will receive £800 in prize money if they beat the west country outfit. If the game is drawn after 90 minutes, a further 30 minutes of extra time will be played.

The match will go to a replay if the scores are still level after 120 minutes.
