TALENTED teenager Tom Blair admitted he was “over the moon” to secure his first full contract with hometown club Dorchester.

The county town winger, who has made a huge impact since arriving at the Avenue earlier this month, was tied down on a two-year deal following the Magpies’ 0-0 draw with Redditch United on Saturday.

Blair, who has supported the club since he was around eight years old, admitted he had “no idea” that manager Mark Jermyn was planning to invest in his services until the summer of 2018 before Saturday’s fixture.

Remarkably, the 17-year-old was part of the reserve side with Bridport that lost 5-2 at Parley Sports in the Dorset Premier League on Saturday, October 1.

Just three weeks later, he has penned terms for two years at the Avenue.

Asked how the contract came about, Blair told Echosport: “I came into the changing room on Saturday before the game against Redditch and I had no idea.

“I started getting changed and doing my match prep and Nick Crittenden said ‘can you come here Tom?’. I thought he was going to say I was starting and talk me through it, but he said ‘come into this office’.

“I walked in and Jem (manager Mark Jermyn) was there, he announced that he wanted me to sign a two-year deal. I was over the moon really.

“As soon as he said it I had to do it. It’s my first full contract and it’s my hometown club. I literally live a two-minute drive from the club.

“It shows that the management have a lot of faith in me and I am just pleased to have that support.”

He added: “I have supported the club for so many years.

“This time last year I remember watching the game in the terraces when we played Redditch as a fan and thinking ‘I really want to play’.

“I started watching them from a really young age and a couple of seasons ago I travelled to most of the away games on the team bus.

“I remember thinking one day I might be there (as a player) and I actually am now, it’s a bit surreal really!”

As well as his football, Blair is at Kingston Maurward College doing a Sport and Fitness course, as well as working part-time in a restaurant in Poundbury.

Reflecting on his time as a fan with the Magpies when he was a child, he said: “I remember my dad’s mate was a director so I used to sit in the directors’ box.

“One of my first times was when we played Yeovil at home in a pre-season game. I was the mascot and I remember Alex Browne was captain, I have a picture of it at home!”

And on his aims for the future, he added: “For me personally it’s to get my head down and work on my fitness.

“I just need to keep being consistent in games and not let my head drop if I don’t play in a game.

“I just need to keep focused on always being ready to play.”
