WEYMOUTH RESERVES 0

DOWNTON 1

WEYMOUTH Reserves’ manager Bradley Asagba did not hold back when assessing his side’s lacklustre defeat to Downton at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday, and labelled their campaign as a whole so far as “embarrassing”.

The defeat leaves the Terras 14th in Sydenhams Wessex One with 26 games accumulated from 21 league outings, with just one point to show from their last two fixtures.

Boss Asagba admitted the aspect of his side’s game that frustrated him the most was a “lack of intensity and lack of desire”.

He told Echosport: “It’s getting to the point now where it is becoming quite frustrating, to be honest.

“We seem to have this mentality in thinking that we can just drift through games.

“We need to just man up really, take some responsibility and say ‘look, we need to win matches’.

“Whether we are a good team or not, at the moment, the league table says that we are not and we are struggling.

“We are closer to the bottom than we are the top.

“To be where we are in the league, if I am being completely honest, is embarrassing for me and it’s embarrassing for them.

“It’s getting to the point now where, for the next five months, we are going to be having trips up and down the M3, playing for absolutely nothing.”

Visitors Downton netted their weekend winner against Weymouth on the half-hour mark, when Jamie Waters was left unmarked in the hosts’ box to head home the winner from a free-kick.

Asagba added: “It was a game that followed the same pattern as the previous week against Totton. We did enough to win the game two or three times over, without being particularly at our best but, again, lapses of concentration cost us.

“My biggest bugbear is our lack of intensity and lack of desire.

“The bottom line is with personnel we have got and the experience we have got, whether they are young or not, we should be winning these matches and we are not.

“We need to refocus ourselves and set some targets to try and salvage our season.”
