DORCHESTER Town interim manager Trevor Senior felt his disappointment at exiting the FA Cup was an “understatement” following a 1-0 away defeat to AFC Portchester.

The Royals, based some two leagues below the Magpies in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division, grabbed an 85th minute winner courtesy of Robbie Evans to punish Dorchester for a catalogue of missed chances.

Speaking to Echosport after the match, Senior admitted his side had a “hatful of chances” and simply “didn’t take them”.

He said: We’re obviously disappointed we have gone out of the cup, that’s an understatement. I thought the first half we were fairly comfortable, but we didn’t create loads.

“They had a couple of efforts from set plays. We had chances and didn’t take them. We spent most of the second half pushing forward. We had a hatful of chances, lots of shots and the keeper saves, but not one goes in.

“They had a ball which was played in the box and it fell to their striker and they forced it over the line. We threw everybody forward but it wasn’t to be.”

Senior believed the lack of a clinical edge up front proved the difference, with no recognised striker fit, and labelled the Magpies’ goalless run of four games as “worrying”.

“If you don’t take your chances you don’t win games, that’s what it’s all about, goals change games. That’s four games we haven’t scored, it’s a bit worrying now really. We have got to take some chances.

“I think the work rate was good, we worked hard. Our fitness we thought might pay dividends but it didn’t so all credit to Portchester and we wish them the best in the next round,” he said.

Magpies’ winger Tom Blair, who had his Ridgeway derby red card rescinded before the game, started up front and missed a succession of opportunities, with Senior conceding he is on the look out for a bona fide forward.

He said: “It’s well documented that we haven’t got an out and out striker at the moment. We’re trying people up there.

“We have tried David Jerrard and we thought that Tom might do the job. He got himself into a few good positions. It wasn’t just him, but the clear chances probably fell to Tom.

“We’ve got to try and get someone in. We have been looking but at this stage of the season it’s difficult. Sides have their players set, but we have got a free week this week to try and bring someone in.”
