DORCHESTER Town manager Steve Thompson feels the Magpies were “toothless” after their 2-0 Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division loss to Banbury United at the Avenue Stadium.

Former Weymouth forward Jefferson Louis and Ravi Shamsi each struck for the Puritans, who broke Dorchester’s unbeaten run of three games in securing victory.

Speaking to Echosport after the game, Thompson believed his side could have “no complaints” about the result.

He said: “We weren’t at it, we can have no complaints because I thought Banbury came here and did a decent job, but I don’t think they set the world alight.

“I think the game was there to be won and to go 82 minutes before we have a good chance with Sam Lanahan’s header, you’re not going to win games if you don’t create.

“For 80 minutes of this game the best we could have got was 0-0 and obviously two mistakes meant that it was 2-0 rather than 0-0.

“Sam knows he should have buried that, but that can’t disguise the fact that for 80 minutes we were pretty toothless.

“If that had gone in then there’s always a chance because teams panic a little more at 2-1 than 2-0. But what disturbed me most was that we created nothing for 82 minutes.”

In the windy conditions produced by Storm Brian, Thompson’s side kicked with the gusts in the first half but the Magpies boss was left to question his team after only two long-range shots were produced.

He said: “They had certainly been told that if we did go with the wind in the first half to get your shots off. Part of it was an urgency that was missing.

“Part of it is intelligence, knowing that when you’re in that final 35 that you can’t play straight balls in behind a team that are deep – they’re just going to roll out of play with the wind.

“And that you have to somehow work the ball to get a shot in and we didn’t really put more than three or four passes together.

“So I’m very disappointed that we came in at half-time having had the wind behind us, with two long-range efforts only.”

Thompson also reiterated his belief that there were two mistakes for Banbury’s goals.

He said: “It was two mistakes for the goals. The first mistake was a player was given number nine – as all players are given a number rather than just to pick up someone.

“I can live with players getting beaten in the air, but that was a free header.

“The second goal, Chad (Collins) will be the first to admit his starting position was wrong because really he should have been collecting on the edge of the box and the lad put it in from about eight or nine yards.

“But the annoying thing for me was to not create anything for 82 minutes. I’m more angry with that than I am the mistakes.”

While disappointed, Thompson insisted that was the first time during his tenure that the Magpies had underperformed throughout a match.

He said: “The disappointing thing for me is how we played for the first 80 minutes and that’s the first time I think I can say that.

“I was disappointed in the second 45 at Hereford but that’s the first time I can say that for nearly 90 minutes I was disappointed. The last 10 minutes we came to life but it was too late.”
