GRASSROOTS volunteer Bob Mowlem is counting on the support of the local community as he bids to win the People’s Award gong at the 2012 FA Community Awards.

The awards, presented by McDonald’s, celebrate those who dedicate their time to support grassroots football in their local area. This year, for the first time, the eight regional winners in the Outstanding Contribution category have been entered into the People’s Award.

This special award gives the people of England the chance to vote for the nominee they believe should be crowned the national winner.

And Dorchester Town Youth coach Mowlem, 65, is among the potential winners after claiming the South West prize.

Mowlem is the current chairman of the Dorset Youth League and has completed almost 50 years of voluntary work in local football.

At just 16, he began running teams in his local league marking the start of his long and distinguished coaching career, which still continues to this day.

Among other duties, in a typical week, Mowlem will deliver community coaching to local schools and clubs as well as attend meetings in his role as acting league secretary for the Dorset Under-10 Mini-Soccer League.

McDonald’s director of football and World Cup winning legend Sir Geoff Hurst said: “Without the energy, enthusiasm and continued dedication of these unsung heroes, grassroots football in so many communities would not be possible.

“It’s clear that these special individuals are an asset to their community and I hope the people of the South West all show their support and vote for Bob.”

The nominee with the most votes will be named the national winner in a glittering ceremony in London on Friday, October 12.
