Upwey & Broadwey 3 STOURPAINE 1
TY Young came off the bench and helped Upwey & Broadwey secure three crucial points at Redlands against Stourpaine.
The high-flying Weymouth outfit began the Dorset Senior League contest like a steam train and should have put the game to bed in the opening 15 minutes.
Ethan Devaney put the hosts ahead by rounding the keeper, following a fine pass from Darren Samways, and he would have had a second had it not been for a bizarre refereeing decision, just moments later.
Upwey boss Steve Reynolds said: “Richard Frost put the ball through this time but after Ethan had taken a couple of touches and drawn the keeper, the referee blew up for a free-kick.
“I naturally thought he had awarded it to Stourpaine but he had actually given it to us for a foul on Frosty.
“Why he did not play advantage I do not know and on another day that might have cost us – it was just unbelievable.”
Despite their blistering start, Upwey failed to get a second and on the half-hour they paid the price when the Steamers levelled.
Reynolds added: “It came after a poor clearance from our keeper Pete Cowne but the lad still had a lot to do and his strike from the edge of the box was superb.
“The rest of the half was a stalemate and then in the second half both teams had chances to go ahead.
“It remained 1-1 until 15 minutes to go and that is when I decided to bring on Ty for Sam Nichols and move Darren Samways to the right.”
The switch immediately paid off when a long free-kick from Sean Stewart was only half cleared to the edge of the box where Young drilled the ball into the corner of the net with an awesome finish.
Frost then went on to wrap up the victory for Upwey with a stunning strike that flew over two defenders before dipping just underneath the crossbar.
Reynolds said: “It was a crucial three points and although we only played well in patches, I was delighted with the overall work-rate.
“We hassled and harried, and everyone was willing to chase back and defend, which was a part of our game that was missing the previous week.”
Second-placed Upwey now sit level on points with leaders Wareham Rangers but Kingston Lacy still remain the team to look out for. They currently lie just one point adrift in third with three games in hand.
Upwey: Cowne, Billings, Stewart, Porteous, Pearce, Frost, Kenderdine, Nichols (Young 75), Devaney, Samways, Bochonko. Subs not used: Purnell, Clark.
