Bristol bulldog spirit for Weymouth

CHANCE: Bryony Webb CHANCE: Bryony Webb

WEYMOUTH LADIES 0 BRISTOL LADIES UNION 0 WEYMOUTH extended their recent run of good form to just one defeat in the last 15 matches when they picked up another valuable South West League Premier Division point at Redlands.

The visitors, who came into the game fresh from a 4-1 victory against title contenders Exeter City the previous weekend, were looking to get revenge on the young hosts, who had managed a stunning 3-1 victory when the sides met earlier in the season.

The home side had the best of the early stages and top scorer Philippa Holden twice went close to breaking the deadlock with one of the attempts being a fabulous volley from the edge of the area that flew just wide.

Bryony Webb and Rhiannon Cowan also had efforts but with both defences on top the game settled into a midfield battle.

Home keeper Eloise Adams was a virtual spectator but no matter how hard they tried Weymouth could not break down a resolute Bristol side for whom McNair was outstanding.

After the break Weymouth manager Tim Davis gambled by pushing skipper Rosie Sharpe up front and sweeper Jess Turk into midfield in a bid to break the deadlock.

However, chances were few and far between with Webb’s corners, which caused the visitors’ defence a few problems, being the closest Weymouth came to winning the match.

At the final whistle a draw was probably the fairest result in a game that neither team did enough to win the match.

Davis said: “I am happy to take four points off Bristol this season who are always a big, strong well organised team.

“We are away at Plymouth tomorrow and then Cheltenham the week after so hopefully we can return from those two trips with something.”
