DORCHESTER Town’s new midfielder Jon Vance has said “there was no decision to be made” after he was approached by Craig Laird to join the club.

His comments come after his man-of-the-match performance against Methyr Town, a game which the Magpies lost 2-1, and Vance insisted he is sure he made the right choice.

He said: “I left Gillingham and I knew Craig from when I’ve been at Taunton and Bridgwater. I respect him as a manager and once he got in touch with me I knew I wanted to play for him.

“Craig plays football the right way and that’s how I want to play.

“There was no decision to make, once he got in touch, I was there, 100 per cent.”

Vance stood out on Saturday for his whole-hearted approach, leadership and vocal nature in midfield, and the former Gillingham Town man said that what you see is what you get.

He said: “I’m straight black and white. I’ll give everything every single game. I’ll try and help the youngsters and I’m happy to battle and I’ll play.

“I’ll give 100 per cent in every game and that’s all I can do."

Speaking of his first two games in the black and white of Dorchester, Vance admitted that things weren’t perfect yet, but that he is confident the club can turn things round.

He said: “We’re still not quite there.

“We showed we can compete with the teams at the top but it’s just little decisions and our final ball which need improving.

“We’ll get there I think, a few of us are still new and we have a bit to learn but when we get there I think we can be competing with the best.

“It was a massive improvement on last week but their goals came from our mistakes. They didn’t score good goals, they were two bad mistakes from us and if we’d cut them out it would have been 1-0.

“It’ll take time but it’ll be alright. We’re training hard, working together and we've got a good team spirit so I’m looking forward to the test.

“We need to stay up and then build for next year.

“We’ve got a good stadium, good fans and we’re heading in the right direction. It’s a shame where we are at the minute but we’ll pull through.

“If everyone backs us 100 per cent, and we give 100 per cent then that’s all we can do.”
