DORCHESTER Town boss Craig Laird was delighted by his side’s ability to carry out “the ugly jobs” in their victory over Dunstable Town.

The game finished 2-0 courtesy of two excellently taken goals by Ollie Bassett and Oliver Mehew, but it was the battling abilities which stood out for the manager.

He said: “It’s nice to get a first win and it’s great for Dorchester because it’s another three points.

“The win was massively important. We rode our luck at times today, but I think we’ve had some back luck over the last few weeks so it’s nice to see some smiling faces.

“I think we earned the result over 90 minutes, we had a plan, we stuck to it and we were able to make some positive substitutions which would allow us to go on to win the game, which it did.

“It was nice to be able to see a game plan through, so it was a pleasing day.

“Survival is in our hands and that’s the best position to be in.”

Laird has spoken in recent weeks about the need to change the players mind sets, and he couldn’t hide his pleasure at seeing a display that he’d come to expect from the football club.

He said: “From the Dorchester side’s I’ve experienced one of the club’s main assets is the ability to compete and compete for each other and that’s something which seemed to have disappeared, but we’ve had to change our mind set so that we aren’t losing games.

“I know it can be horrible to watch sometimes but we have to get our security in this division so whatever we need to do to do that, we will do.”

Ollie Bassett was a surprise omission from the starting line-up, but Laird was pleased with the impact of Bassett and all the other youngsters.

He said: “It was an ideal time for him to score but then we nearly conceded straight after, but we dug in and told the team to do their individual jobs and they did that until the end of the game

“It was nice bringing Ollie on down the middle, with his pace and freshness to get in behind them.

“These lads don’t have to start games to win them, they can come on and win them or come on and secure them so it’s important that I get that knowledge into them.”
