DOLPHIN 2

ABBEY 1

A LAST-GASP winner from Dolphin’s Phil Anderson ensured his side secured a league and cup double, with a dramatic victory over Abbey.

The Weymouth Sunday League champions netted the winner in stoppage time to sink the Bournemouth Sunday League Division One outfit, in a thrilling finale to the county competition at the County Ground.

It was Abbey who took the lead after 15 minutes when Mark Dykes powerfully headed home from a corner.

Abbey then went in search of a second, a cross from the right found former Dorchester Town man Sam Lanahan, whose header looped on to the top of the bar

Lanahan, who was playing up front for the Bournemouth League team, then showed quick feet to force a sharp save from Clinton Coltart in the Dolphin goal, as Abbey continued to put the pressure on.

Following the break, and having made a couple of changes, Dolphin upped the tempo.

Their first chance came just three minutes after the restart but striker Danny Andrews failed to react quickly enough to get his effort on goal.

Lanahan then forced another good save at the other end and a heap of opportunities went begging for Abbey, who failed to put the game to bed.

And on 68 minutes, they were punished as Dolphin levelled the contest up.

After good work from Andrews and Ismail Stewart, up popped Ricky Lane to put the ball home from close range and set up a grandstand finish.

Sean Zima then fired wide for Dolphin and Abbey’s Richie Sands saw his effort charged down 10 minutes from time but it was Anderson who ensured the trophy was heading back to Weymouth.

He powered a header home from a corner with just seconds left on the clock to start the party for the Sunday side.
