PORTLAND United finally got their hands on the Sydenhams Wessex Premier League title, as the club held their end-of-season awards ceremony at the island’s Masonic Hall.

Ryan McKechnie, who scored what proved to be the title-winning goal on the final day of the campaign against Bemerton Heath Harlequins at Grove Corner, was the star of the show, scooping a hat-trick of awards on the night.

He took the prize of leading goalscorer, player of the year and supporters’ player to cap off a memorable campaign.

Defender Ross Carmichael, who is now set to join up with Alresford Town, was awarded the players’ player honour, and Josh Camp earned the young player of the year.

In the reserve team, Jordan Moore bagged a prize double, winning the supporters’ player and most improved player. Camp took the players’ player, Leon Attree was named player of the year and striker Paul Cole took the leading goalscorer accolade.

There was also a special award for reserves’ boss Justin Faulkner, who was named the Blues’ clubman of the year.

The players also got the chance to say goodbye to boss Gary Bailey, who announced he was stepping down as first-team boss.

Portland have already appointed former Wimborne and Hamworthy United manager, ex-Terra Simon Browne as their new first-team manager.
