PORTLAND United boss Simon Browne is looking to pick up a Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division win away to Brockenhurst that will make things “a bit rosier” for his side.

Browne’s men travel to the Badgers having claimed two consecutive wins against Alresford Town and Sholing to erase a spell of seven league games without a win from the memory.

The Blues’ manager is also keen for his team to carry the “right attitude” into the match.

He told Echosport: “Going into it, if we can pick up a win with three on the bounce things are looking a bit rosier for us.

“Brockenhurst won in the FA Vase at Godalming so they’re a reasonable side. Brockenhurst are one of those sides that on their day are half decent, but it’s about us going there with the right attitude.

“Hopefully the lads are learning what we expect of them now. It’s one of those games where if we apply ourselves we can get something out of it.”

Browne is looking for a more settled squad and is eager to address the “mentality” of his players to find a more clinical edge.

But he admitted that Lewis Clarke would miss the fixture through work commitments and Ross Doidge is "struggling” for the same reason.

He said: “Ross might be struggling with his work commitments. Lewis is out which is a shame because he missed the last couple of games and then came on and did really well against Sholing.

“He’s scored the winning goal and unfortunately is going to be out of the side again. If players want to play for me regularly they’ve got to make themselves available.”

He added: “Sholing before the game had lost three league games, so had we, and we were quite a few places apart. You look at us being a bit more clinical and we’d be up with Sholing.

“It’s just changing the mentality of a couple of them and hopefully we can start going to the top of the table and not languishing in mid-table.”

Portland are also expected to include former Weymouth Reserves captain Aston Butcher in their squad for the match, with the centre-back having agreed to move to Grove Corner.

Browne said: “I want there to be competition for places in the side, regardless of who’s there. I need to get people in who understand what we want to do.

“I certainly want competition in the squad because people turn up and expect to play which is when you get performances like the Amesbury match. I don’t want that in any shape or form.

“Hopefully last week and Saturday going forward people know what’s expected of them and we can start moving back up that table.”

On Butcher’s move, Weymouth assistant-manager Paul Maitland wished him well for the future and added that other Terras’ reserves players are free to look for other clubs.

He said: “We just thank him for his effort over the years and wish him the best over at Portland and whatever he does in the future. They’re all free for go and sign for other clubs.”
