DORCHESTER Town manager Steve Thompson has received a call-up for the England Veterans Squad for the World Cup in Thailand later this year.

England have won the tournament, where there always has to be three players over 50 on the pitch for a team, on the past two occasions.

Thompson will spend three days in Bangkok for a training camp before travelling south for the tournament, which could see the England team play up to six matches.

Thompson described the call-up as a big honour, and found out in late April which came after playing in a veterans game back in November.

Thompson told Echosport: "I found out a couple of weeks ago, I got the call. I played in a veterans game back in November, and there was a couple of people involved in that set-up played in that game. I think they felt with my fitness at the age that I am I would be able to compete in that.

"I only play a very few veterans games throughout the season but obviously I do join in in training now and then at the end for the last 15-20 minutes and I try to keep myself fit at the gym so it is a reward for being fit. I have always been known as a very fit player so it is a good reward after keeping myself in as good a condition as possible.

"I am really looking forward to it. It is obviously a big honour to represent your country, and I am really looking forward to it. I have never been to Thailand. There are really lots of things to look forward to in respect of the trip and the competition."
