WEYMOUTH College's men's football team have emerged victorious in the English College’s Football Association (ECFA) Men’s South West Region Category Three (South East) League.

Under the leadership of Dorchester Town manager Steve Thompson and team coach Andy Yates, the college took eight wins from 10 games, finishing on 24 points to beat Strode College in second by six points.

Commenting on the achievement, Yates and Thompson said: "The team have had a great season and truly deserve this league win in 2018. One of our most difficult games physically was playing Minehead away in minus eight degrees and snow, whilst the highlight has to be coming from 2-0 down to score four goals and win our highly-contested local derby against Kingston Maurward. Well done everyone!”

Speaking exclusively to Echosport on the success, Thompson added: "Whoever you are, you want to win trophies. We'll go out for a big meal to celebrate that league win.

"Someone who I know phoned me and let it be known that the job was available. I take them for a couple of training sessions and the matches and that's really it."

The team are also pleased to announce that they will be sponsored by Weymouth-based Exo IT Services next season.

Meanwhile, the Weymouth College Football Academy are holding trials for the 2018/19 season on Wednesday, May 2 from 4.15pm at Redlands Sports Hub – see the college website for full details.
